Why Is Maintenance & Servicing Important?

The owner occupier has a responsibility to ensure that their gas installation and appliances do not constitute a danger to any person when in use. Manufacturers Maintenance Instructions specify service parameters and requirements for safe and efficient appliance use. ARGI recommend as a minimum an annual service and system safety check, or at a reduced interval as may be deemed necessary by the registered gas installer in attendance.

What Could Happen If Not Regularly Serviced?

Gas is a safe fuel when treated correctly. If an appliance starts to burn gas inefficiently and/ or the flue fails (a) It costs you money (b) production of excess carbon monoxide could kill or severely disable you. Do not use any appliance you think is working incorrectly. Be safe, call your Registered Gas Installer.

Signs to look out for include yellow or orange flames (except for fuel-effect fires ), soot or yellow/ brown stains around the appliance/ flue and pilot lights which frequently go out.

A pilot light should always have a crisp blue flame.

What If I Am a Tenant?

Generally the Landlord has an obligation to ensure that all appliances, flues and installation pipework are maintained safely. A safety check must be carried out within one year of the previous check. A safety check does not constitute a service. Manufacturers maintenance requirements may specify that the appliance requires an annual service.

ARGI recommend the use of approved electronic Carbon Monoxide Alarms
CO Alarms are not a substitute for the correct maintenance of gas appliances
