Lay persons guide to Gas Safety
On the ground gas safety is between the registered gas installer and the responsible person.
These pages are intended to give a brief guide to gas safety issues. A guide to legislation gives
an insight into the code of practice governing how gas work is carried out.
- Registered Gas Installers (RGI's)
All current RGI's are issued with an identity card (credit card size)this has a
photograph of the installer, registration and serial numbers. Also a phone number and web address
where the validity of the card holder can be checked. Just as important is the information on
the back which lists the categories in which the RGI is registered to work.
- Responsible Person
If you are the owner/ occupier, or person with permission to act in relation to a gas fitting, the
responsible person is you. The onus is upon you to ensure that the persons you employ to carry out
gas work are registered and working within their defined categories.
Regular maintenance and servicing helps to ensure safe and efficient appliances.
- Safety of your system/ appliances and you.
RGI's have an obligation to point out any gas related defects within your property.
They will advise on the defect and recommend a course of action.
This is for your safety.
Should the advice be that the appliance or system be switched off or disconnected and capped off,
your permission will be required.
The RGI is advised to warn you that it is an offence to use or allow the use of an unsafe gas
appliance, issue relevant paperwork and attach a warning notice. Without permission, he/ she
is advised to notify your gas supplier.
