All fossil fuels produce Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Have you really got the flu, headaches, stomach pains, nausea, tiredness, breathlessness, visual problems, feeing generally under the weather, is your behaviour erratic. Carbon Monoxide is a tasteless, odourless and colourless gas which can produce these symptoms.

Two of the early signs may be:

  • Soot in the room, brown/yellow staining around appliances.
  • Is your appliance burning incorrectly (yellow orange flame)
Switch off the appliance. Vacate the premises. Breathe fresh air.

Seek medical attention
(Leave door fully open and if possible open another door from outside to force ventilate the premises)
Call your Registered Gas Installer
or Emergency Service provider (see smell gas? for numbers)

    Also:

  • When was your chimney/ flue last swept and inspected ?
  • When were your gas appliances, serviced or safety checked ?
  • Is there enough ventilation in your room

  • Do Not block or cover ventilators, clean regularly

Do Not use a portable gas cabinet heater in an unventilated room

Do Not use your gas oven or hob for heating the kitchen

Detailed information on CO poisoning can be found at CO-Awareness.
ARGI are the preferred techical advisors to CO-Awareness for gas.

Remember
All fossil fuels give off CO so also check coal, oil and wood burning appliances

ARGI recommend the use of approved electronic Carbon Monoxide Alarms
CO Alarms are not a substitute for the correct maintenance of gas appliances
